SCRAPBOOK PAGE IN A BOX with Susan
Odd Show NSD Live 11:00am EST
Project and Instructions by Susan M. Brown {sbartist}
This is a fantastic and quick gift to make that uses supplies on hand and some photos. This can be used as a holiday greeting, thank you gift, or party favors…the possibilities are endless. The thing that is great about this project is that it can unfold flat and go straight into the recipients 12×12 scrapbook -OR- can be embellished to be a piece that can sit on a table to be a surprise for anyone that opens it. This is a great project to do with the kids, too!
The instructions are for a basic grid pattern, like a quilt block. I have created several of these and I have played around with the variations of the squares & embellishments. The photos are of my Christmas Gift box I made while in Chicago at Christmas with my family. I got pictures developed during the trip, made it there and mailed to my Dad in Alabama to receive on Christmas Eve. He loved it. I made a matching pair for my sister and myself, too.
2 sheets 12″ x 12″ two-sided patterned paper
1 sheet 12″ x 12″ solid/coordinating cardstock for matting photos
1 yard of one or two coordinating ribbons [ex: 1” wide sheer and a 1/4" satin]
Adhesive [strong paper glue or dry dot adhesive dispenser - permanent]
Paper trimmer or craft knife, ruler and cutting mat .
3-D dots
Scoring tool or stylus
Bone folder
Pencil
Varied optional items: photos, stickers, rubber stamps, misc. embellishments, ephemera and ink for distressing
INSTRUCTIONS:
Determine which patterned paper will be box and which will be lid.
Assembling the Box Lid:
1.) Take the patterned paper selected for lid and cut in half to 6” x 12”. Then cut this piece in half to 6” x 6”. Take one 6” x 6” section and place stripe side down [which will be the outside]. Place remaining pieces aside.
2.) Score around all four sides at 15/16″ [which is one line under 1" mark on most paper trimmers]. Don’t worry about the exact number measurement. just come in one line smaller than 1″ mark. This is so lid will fit on box.
3.) Fold along scored lines, using your bone folder to get nice crisp edges. Ink edges if desired.
4.) Crease diagonally only in the four small square corners of the scored area. This can be done by hand – OR – by taking a ruler from point to point and making a score line with the stylus or bone folder.
5.) Fold comers inward and adhere inside lid with adhesive/glue. Lid is complete.
Assembling the Box: (With interior as a grid pattern)
1.) Take patterned paper for box and determine which side will be inside of box. With inside pattern face up, use your paper trimmer [or with ruler, pencil and stylus] fitted with scoring blade/shuttle score in 4 inches from edge around all four sides. MAKE SURE NOT TO PRESS TOO HARD SO THAT SCORING TOOL DOES NOT CUT THROUGH PAPER.
2.) Fold along scored lines, using your bone folder to get nice crisp edges.
3.) Unfold paper an lay flat so you can see a nine square grid. Using the diagram below, cut on the score line at the following points [marked with a yellow line]: To the right of box #1; the bottom of box #3; the left side of box #9: and the top of box #7. Ink edges if desired.
4.) Take remaining patterned cardstock and cut five (5) 3 3/4″ X 3 3/4” squares. Also cut four (4) 3 3/4” x 3 3/4” squares from solid cardstock for matting photos.
5.) Adhere four of the patterned squares to the background – one in each corner [squares #1, 3, 7, and 9] leaving 1/8” from score lines and edges. Adhere last remaining striped square to the center of page [square #5] with opposite patterned side up. This box I varied by placing papers three in a row.
6.) Trim photos to 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2” and mat with solid cardstock squares. Adhere to remaining background squares [#2, 4, 6 and 8].
7.) Adhere sentiment or stickers to center square. Ink edges if desired. Pop up using 3-D dots on bottom and place in center square as desired.
8.) Embellish with stickers, stamps, or other ephemera as desired. Keep in mind not to place items across the folds or you will not be able to close the box (if you want items to go over folds, cut apart and leave a slight gap where fold is).
9.) Your box is now complete. Fold up box sides and place lid on top to keep closed.
10.) Overlap two ribbons and tie around box from bottom to top and tie into a nice bow on top.
This box can be shipped in a small square shipping box and is a unique gift that will surely impress and delight your recipient who will open this up and place it directly into their 12 x 12 scrapbook. ENJOY!!!
